Jefferson Things to Do
Jefferson is a city in Eastern Texas that is known as a center of tourism and history for the region. Due to its long history and number of attractions, there are many things to do when visiting the area.
Carriage rides
Old historic towns and horse and carriage rides complement eachother very well. When the two combine together, they can mentally transport you to a different age and time. As you explore the streets, you’ll notice several carriage companies. One of these is the Jefferson Carriage Company, which operates from Thursday through Saturday. These rides are operated by Tom and Liza Jane. Because these rides are in high demand, reservations should be made ahead of time when possible. As you move along the streets, you’ll notice the beautiful bed and breakfasts, the lovingly restored homes, and the delightfully shady streets of the town. A carriage ride is the perfect ending to any visitor’s getaway weekend.
The Turning Basin Bayou Cruise
The Turning Basin Bayou Cruise makes for a great Sunday afternoon diversion. Tourists who have never explored a bayou by boat before should get ready for an entirely new experience. These trips cruise lazily up the Big Cyprus Bayou. Riders will pass by the tall and sturdy Cyprus Trees, overhanging River Birch trees, and even the occasional turtle sunning itself on a fallen branch. Every once in a while, an alligator presents itself on this stretch of water, although its appearance is usually brief. Tourists will notice dragonflies buzzing slowly by and the scent of wood that hangs in the air. This journey makes for an easygoing conclusion to any visit.
History
The Jefferson Historical Society Museum is located in the Old U. S. Post Office Building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum offers four floors of displays about the history of Jefferson, East Texas and Louisiana. Nearby is the Schluter Home. Although this home is not open to the public, it’s an example of the late Greek Revival style of architecture. Cast iron balasters are an element of this design, which is reflected in this home more than any other in the town of Jefferson. Although not allowed inside, visitors can still take photos of its impressive exterior. Finally, visitors will want to stop in on The Gone With the Wind Museum. This museum collects paraphernalia from the movie of the same name. The collection includes costumes, the Madame Alexander dolls, autographs signed by the movie stars, and many other collectibles.
