Authentic Chinatown Experience

Victoria’s locations on the Pacific Coast of Canada means it has a strong Asian influence. This is especially apparent when you make a visit to Chinatown. There are other Canadian cities that have their own Chinatown, but Victoria’s is the oldest. In fact, the only city in North America with an older Chinatown is San Francisco. Visitors can take a stroll down the narrowest street in the city, Fan Tan Alley, a street that once lined with opium dens and is now lined with shops and restaurants. There are two temples in the six-block area along with a few schools and hundreds of different shops.

Butchart Gardens

For an enchanting getaway rife with natural beauty in the middle of the city, you should go to Butchart Gardens. There are various tours offered throughout the day. For the best experience, get a map of the grounds and plan to spend an entire day on the grounds. The usual tour last about two hours, but this is just a sliver of the time needed to experience the entire thing. Victoria is sometimes called the “City of Gardens” and this is certainly the premier one. You can access the the gardens both during the day and night.

Stay at the Empress Hotel

The Empress is the most popular luxury hotel in the city. It has a strong Victorian appeal and still adheres to many British traditions to this day. The grandest of these traditions of afternoon tea. Even if you aren’t staying there, be sure to get afternoon tea and sample some of the taste bud-enlightening pastries made by their five-star pastry chefs. The views during tea of the Inner Harbor are spectacular.

The Fisherman’s Wharf

This isn’t the first place that many tourists visit. The Fisherman’s Wharf is certainly one of the hidden treasures of Victoria. Some of the freshest fish around is served at the Wharf. After you eat your lunch, you and your fellow travelers can rent a kayak and go out on the water. One of the best aspects of the Wharf is how close it is located to downtown, making it easily accessible. When you get back from your trip, wind down and take a look at some of the quirky houseboats on the marina or stop and feed the seals that will come right up to your outstretched hand out of the water. You can spend an entire afternoon at the Wharf without getting bored.
