On the northwestern coast of Australia, Port Douglas sees many tourists each year. People come from all over to swim, shop, and enjoy the shore. Despite all the wonderful things about it, like with any tourist destination, there are certain dangers to be aware of to stay safe.

Winter Months

Best to use an excursion company for snorkeling during these months. Expect the water in the winter months to be cold and the current to be strong. An excursion company will provide lines with floats on them to hold onto. Having these in place allows you to safely swim out a little way and be swept back to the lines. Divers are present in case you missed the line. They also provide Lycra suits to protect against the dangerous jellyfish that inhabit this area.

Saltwater Crocodiles

Saltwater Crocodiles are a real danger in this area. Good advice is to read signs if you see them. Tourists have been reportedly dragged off by these crocodiles when swimming in marked areas during winter months. These crocodiles can be 12 foot or more long, a truly terrifying thought. It should be noted that sometimes the warning signs can be easily missed, depending on which way the person is coming from. It is highly recommended that tourists stay in groups in the safe areas at the resorts.

Jellyfish Sting

The large box jelly fish in the area can deliver an impressive sting, but it is not usually life threatening. Tourist report being treated with vinegar by resort workers on the beach if this does happen. There are usually stations around with warning signs about jelly fish that will have a container of vinegar for emergencies.

There is however a smaller and far more dangerous jelly fish in this area known as the Irukandji jellyfish. They are the smallest and most venomous jellyfish in the world and inhabit the marine waters of Australia and the US. There are more of them in the Northern waters of Australia than anywhere else. The worst part is you will not feel the sting like in other jelly fish. If you start feeling terrible after a swim, best to go get checked out right away.

Very Expensive

Everything in the area seems to be over priced, but seafood may be the worst. Places in this area tend to be over the top, but if you search around, you can find a good deal. One traveler encourages, “Just bring a lot of money. You will spend it all.” Seafood at a lower cost is just as quality as the over priced stuff. Then you can leave a better tip!
