Deception Pass State Park Things to Do
Known for its eye-catching sunsets, cliffs, and beaches, Deception Pass is the most visited state parks in Washington. There are many popular beaches and hiking trails that are great for locals and tourists.
Beaches
North Beach
Since the beach is sheltered from the sun, it is considered to be the coldest. Even though it lacks the ocean-type view, it still has the best view in the park as it is facing Deception Pass. Visitors can view the amazing bridges that separate Fidalgo Island and Widbey Island. The beach experiences bizarre currents during the times when tides are changing. Because of that, the beach becomes engulfed with driftwood that comes up.
Keep in mind that this can be the most difficult beach to get to and is quite far from parking areas.
Rosario Beach
The beach is situated on a small peninsula that faces toward San Juan Island and Vancouver Island. In contrast to North Beach, visitors will see multiple hiking trails as they are leaving the beach and one trail has a loop at the circular area of the peninsula. There is an open grass area and plenty of picnic tables. Another notable feature is the statue of The Maiden of Deception Pass that was placed on the beach. The statue has a Native American story behind it.
The view at the beach may not be as good as North Beach since visitors are only offered a minimal view of the bridges and Deception Pass itself.
West Beach
This beach has the most activity in Deception Pass. It faces directly toward Victoria and Vancouver Island. It has more sun than North Beach and there is a nearby parking lot. There is more convenient access to facilities such as toilets and picnic areas. There is a good amount of wind at the beach and visitors can take advantage of the opportunity to do some kite flying.
Visitors can venture out on various walking trails that lead them to North Beach, bridges, and other areas of the park. There are amazing views from the beach such as the Olympic Mountains.
Hiking
Deception Pass State Park
Visitors can explore 38 miles of scenic hiking trails. Take advantage of beautiful lakes that are within park boundaries and various wildlife such as sea birds and waterfowl. In the waterway, visitors may come across sea mammals. Before leaving, take a look at the landscape.
Bowman Bay hike
There is a trail along the cliffs and through the trees that lead to Bowman Bay. The walk is pretty short and should be no more than one mile. During the hike, visitors will get beautiful views of red madrone trees and the water. An additional strip of the beach is in Bowman Bay along with the camping area.
