Things to do in Taormina
Taormina is definitely a destination for tourists in Italy. Tourists have many options of places to visit and views to see. Following are a few suggestions of local attractions:
Greek Theatre
The Ancient Greek theatre dates from third century B.C. and is the most remarkable monument in Taormina. It is also the most celebrated ruins in Sicily. The theatre is the second largest of its kind in Sicily (after Syracuse) and is often still used for opera and theatrical performances and concerts. Admission costs 8 Euro with a discount for teachers from anywhere in the EU.
Giardini Naxos
Giardini Naxos is said to be first greek colony in the region of Sicily. It’s a touristy town right under Taormina along the sea and is now full of hotels and restaurants. If you are travelling by car in Taormina, I’d recommend that you to stay in a hotel at the sea with Taormina close by. Giardini Naxos is also an archeological dig locality as the ancient city used to be there. You will also find a museum there. The name Gardens likely comes from cultivation of special trees years ago.
Public Gardens
Villa Comunale is a public gardenin Taormina with excellent views over the Mediterranean and Mount Etna. The original owner, English Lady Florence Trevelayn began living in a villa there in 1884 and later donated the gardens to Taormina to be turned into a public park.
Castelmola
Don’ miss Castelmola! This scenic, old-feel village sits above Taormina and offers some of the most unbelievable panoramic views of the surrounding mountainous terrain and the Ionian Sea. On clear days you can also see the mainland of Italy. Castelmola used to serve as a lookout point to help guard and prepare for attacks from the mainland of Europe when it fell into several different hands during the last 2,000 years, including the Greeks, Romans, and Arabs. The most popular attraction is the remnants of the 16th century castle that carriy the village’s namesake.
