Fiji Warnings and Dangers
Traveling to Figi is a dream trip for many people. Know any potential dangers before you go so you can reasonably protect yourself during your trip.
Warnings About Shopping
In Port Denarau you’ll find rare and exotic seashells for sale in the souvenir shops. Be careful, some of the shells are considered to be rare and an “endangered species”. You could be fined for your newly-bought shell and it be confiscated by customs. Beware of shop owners who talk about special “export certificates” – just because something can be taken out of Figi doesn’t mean it’ll be allowed into your home country. Also watch out for the sword sellers. They approach tourists in the market, appearing to be friendly locals, and in conversation will ask their names. Upon learning it, the sword seller immediately engraves the name into a wooden sword, presents it, and demands a high price for it. Many people pay out of obligation. To avoid this, say hello, but don’t give your name.
Taxi Drivers
Many taxis don’t use meters so agreeing on a price with the driver ahead of time will save some conflict and aggravation. Make sure the driver understands the agreement (both the amount and currency). Also, beware of offered prices, some drivers will inflate the going rate.
Crime
Don’t travel alone if you can avoid it. There have been reports of females being attacked or targeted while in Figi. Some people also warn to be especially cautious when going to places that offer horseback riding, recommending tourists insist on staying in view of other travelers at all times and to avoid the forest rides. Some of the men have reportedly made women feel uncomfortable or threatened.
One last thing, beware of falling coconuts! Don’t sit underneath these trees as the coconuts tend to fall unexpectedly – you don’t want one to land on your head.
