Venezuela and Dangers
Rich in culture, food, and entertainment, Venezuela is a popular tourist attraction, especially through cruises or cruise lines. However, like any large metropolitan area, there are many obvious or hidden dangers just waiting to strike unaware tourists.
Keeping Your Information Safe When Using an ATM
Just walking up to a regular ATM to access your account seems harmless to the average person, in the scheme of things, but imagine walking up to an ATM in a mostly Spanish speaking country, like Venezuela. Many times the English option does not work, so you will have to maneuver your way around with the instructions in Spanish.
First and foremost, you will have to make sure you are using the right ATM, as most are for Plus or Cirrus cards. You will have to enter either the first two or last two digits of your passport. You may have to go through entering your information a few times before it works. Once your transaction does take place, you should swipe your card again and use a fake PIN. Thieves are lurking everywhere. If your information is not erased from the ATM, thieves will have the power to steal your information.
Be Aware of the Cost of Things and the Exchange Rate
Taxi drivers near the airports love to try and take advantage of tourists. If a tourist seems like they are not aware of cab fare rates, most taxi drivers will try and charge an outrageous rate to drive you from the airport to your hotel. Play it smart and call ahead. Ask your hotel about cab fares from the airport, or book an official taxi service before your arrival. Keep the exchange rate from bolivars to dollars, as most taxi drivers will try and cheat you.
