Marrakesh Shopping Tips
Marrakesh is one big open air market and must be one of the best places in the world if you want to go bargain hunting. Just remember to haggle with the vendors: that’s how everyone shops in Morocco.
The Medina
The Medina’s street are a real truly Moroccan experience and the main reason to come to Marrakech for most people. The Medina seems like a mess, but it’s actually very well organized according to its owns rules. Always walk on your right to avoid mishaps with motorbikes and other people. Try to act like a local more than a tourist, and show respect for the culture.
Most of the Medina is covered by a roof of sticks to block the sun. Every vendor will invite you to visit their shops, “just a look, not to buy.” It’s better not to look unless you really want to bargain with them. In any case don’t be afraid if they look angry with you for not buying, it’s just a part of their “roll.”
Lamps
The Ferblantier Square, close to El Badi Palace, is the traditional place for lamps and lanterns, made by hand in copper or other metals. Moroccan lamps are very beautiful to see, especially when lit.
Carpets
There are thousands of carpet stores in Marrakesh, selling Berber carpets and kelims, mainly to tourists. Unless you have plenty of floor space to cover, it’s a good idea to have a clear idea about what you really want before you start a session in a hot carpet bazaar. Souk Semmarine has some big carpet emporiums.
Try several shops to get an idea of the goods and prices. A good dealer will be able to arrange for shipping of larger items. Be sure to check about customs arrangements at your end. Try Au Minaret de Mouassine – the owner, Hassan Errijaji, speaks English and has years of experience.
