Transportation in Palma de Mallorca: Soller Railway
The Tren du Soller is a wooden train that runs from one town to another on the island of Mallorca. Many visitors would say that their trip was not complete until they traveled the rail between Soller and Palma, taking in the gorgeous views and the stunning scenery.
The Route
The train departs from the center of Palma and arrives at the beautiful seaside town of Soller, passing small villages like Palmanyola and Bunyola on the way. It takes about ninety minutes to ride the Tren du Soller. The train runs five times a day, and tickets can be obtained for one way or return trips. Unique views of the Traumutana Mountains, valleys full of forest and picturesque Spanish homes, and the surrounding Mediterranean scenery combine to make this an unforgettable ride. There are no fewer than 13 tunnels to travel through and a large number of spectacular bridges on the route.
The Train
The train is powered entirely by electricity, which is transmitted to it through the rails. The passenger carriages are made out of wood and have beautiful fixtures. The train and track were constructed in 1912 and retain much of the charm from that period. The specific tram cars in use now were obtained from San Francisco in the 1930s, and they have been wonderfully preserved in the Mediterranean climate. The train tends to be crowded around the hours when people go to work or go home. The Tren du Soller is one of the most common methods of transportation in that part of Mallorca, and any number of ordinary Spanish citizens will be encountered.
