Salerno Things to Do
Salerno has a long and rich history that includes being the location for the first medical school in the world and having artifacts and relics that date back to ancient times. If you are planning to go to Salerno but don’t really know what you are going to do when you get there, here are some things you can do to make your trip a memorable one.
Old Salerno
Old Salerno is squeezed in between the mountains and the sea. You can take a great stroll along the main avenue filled with magnolias, jacarandas, and pine trees that stay green throughout the winter. There are many nice cafeterias and restaurants where you can get food made with local recipes that reflect the tastes of the Salerno people has they have evolved over the years.
Take a Walk Along the Sea
You should spend some time walking along the seashore. The water may be not the clearest in Salerno area (for that you will need to go a bit further than the city area), but the trees, the climate, the horizon over the sea, and the mountains on the opposite side of the harbor are food for the soul and the walk will put you in a good mood.
Amalfi
Amalfi was once a powerful maritime town until it was conquered in 1131 by King Roger from Naples. When you arrive in Amalfi, you will discover a little village near a harbor and beach. You should go see the “Flavio Gioia” monument. Flavio Gioia was a citizen of Amalfi and he was the inventor of the “compass”. While in Amalfi, you should also visit the Duomo and Chiostro del Paradiso cemeteries where famous Amalfi citizen rest-in-peace.
The best way to get to Amalfi is to take a boat from Salerno’s harbor. The boat also stops in Positano, Sorrento, and Capri – so you will be able to see one of the best panoramas in Italy as you travel past the shoreline.
Furore
Furore is a little village on the Amalfi-Coast between Amalfi and Positano and is famous because is the only Fiord in the south of Europe – Yes, just as in Sweden or Norway! Furore is also famous because once a year a world-famous diving competition takes place in the city. The divers jump off of a bridge on the Amalfi coastal road into the sea below.
