Nerja Transportation
The Village of Nerja is located east of Malaga between the foothills of the Sierra Almijara Mountains and the cobalt blue of the Mediterranean Sea. Getting here isn’t that easy but once you’re here, you’ll never want to leave.
Getting to Nerja
The closest airport or train station is in Malaga about 40 miles from Nerja. There is no train service but there are both public buses and private transfer services that can be booked prior to arrival. Even though Nerja is a port town, they have no docking facilities. Once you’ve arrived at the airport or train station, there are tourist kiosks that can direct you to the proper place to find your transport. All the buses are large, clean and have stowaway places for luggage. By public transportation it takes about an hour with a change of bus at the train station in downtown Malaga before heading towards Nerja and beyond.
Note: If you take the public options, you are responsible for changing over your luggage from one bus to the next. There are direct transfer buses that cost a bit more but go directly to Nerja.
Car rental is also an option however even in the off season parking is very difficult as the streets in the town are extremely small. There are parking lots but this means parking then walking to your hotel or guest cottage.
Nerja has a taxi service that is bookable online for pick up at the Malaga airport. The cost is about $70 and takes just around 40 minutes. Worth the expense if there are several of you and you plan to stay in Nerja for the duration of your holiday.
Getting around in Nerja
The easiest way to get around in the Nerja is walking. Pick up a free guide book at the tourist center near the Balcony of Europe. It’s has a great map of where to find internet cafes, coffee houses, shopping and bars. X-Bike rental shop off the Pueblo Andaluz if you want to roll around Nerja. They rent by the day or week.
