Seafood

In Genoa you can find plenty of fine, fresh, fish and crabs. Asking 26€ for the wild orata (orata nostrana) however is a bit high and should cost around 20 euros instead. There are some lower priced dealers, but you have to be careful not to pay too little, or you may be getting a defective or poor quality product. Even calamari (squid fish) cost a bit too much. It is possible to bargain a bit, especially if you’re buying more then 1 kg or shopping after 1 or 2am. The fish isn’t worth much after a day, so vendors usually need to sell it the same day and therefore drop their prices before closing.

Food Shops

Around the ancient historic centre you’ll find a fascinating array of food shops. There are shops selling all manner of spices, fishmongers selling some of the freshest fish available, and a lovely shop selling fresh pasta.  Pesto is also a great buy and one of the most famous exports, so be sure to try it at least once!

In Via Garibaldi you’ll find a shop totally that is totally unique. It holds household items, furniture, crystals, and fine china which are all displayed as they would be in a beautiful home. Here you’ll find everything from little household items that make great gifts, to extraordinary selections of porcelain tableware, crystal and cutlery. Anyone who loved home décor and house wares will definitely enjoy browsing this beautiful store.
