Women in Cairo and Other Warnings and Dangers

Warnings and Dangers in Cairo Women

Women traveling alone in Cairo face more challenges as they navigate through the city. From avoiding harassment from men to following dress codes, women visitors have to take precautions to keep themselves safe.

Harassment

Even native Egyptian women face harassment in Cairo, but foreign women tend to get more of the unwanted attention. If you’re fair-skinned and/or blonde you’ll stand even a greater chance of being harassed. You may also often get asked if you’re married. Simply tell them yes and consider wearing a ring even if you’re not married. Egyptians are fascinated with blonde hair and may reach out and try to touch it. Don’t be surprised if you also get pinched or slapped as you walk down the sidewalk. Your best bet is to steer clear of men and boys hanging around in the street. If you are touched or harassed, then be assertive and yell loudly for them to stop.

Dress Conservatively

One way to protect yourself and lessen the harassment is to dress conservatively. Wear only loose clothing and try to dress like the local women. It won’t totally stop the harassment, but it makes you stand out less as a foreign visitor. You can wear your hair how you like and aren’t required to cover your head. Still, if you’re blonde you will have less problems if you wear a hat, head scarf, or hijab while out in public areas. In private clubs or beaches, you will generally have more freedom to dress how you want.
