Walking into Tijuana

When traveling from the United States to Tijuana, many people prefer to walk across the border rather than deal with the headaches associated with driving.

Why Walk?

Aside from traffic, there are a number of reasons why people opt to walk. If driving a rental, these are prohibited from being driven into Mexico without permission. Cars also need Mexican insurance. Additionally, the U.S./Tijuana border crossing handles a high level of traffic, the lines are very long, especially getting back into the United States. Walking is quicker.

Taking the Trolley from San Diego

If you are staying in San Diego and want to walk into Mexico, you can take a trolley from downtown to the border; the ride is about 35-40 minutes. Once you get off the trolley, you’ll reach the final gate before you’re in Mexico. Once you pass through here, you must pass through U.S. Customs and Immigration to re-enter the USA.

Tips for Walking Into Mexico

Travelers say, if going by foot, the border crossing at Otay Mesa is easier than San Ysidro. The crossing normally takes less than 10 minutes when going from the U.S. to Mexico.

• If you drive your own car (or rental) to the border, leave it in one of the parking lots and pay the parking fee. Tijuana is about a 10-20 minute walk from this point.
• Do not leave the U.S. without your I.D.
• Once in Mexico, you go to the “red/green” light stand and push the button. If you get green, continue on your way but if it shows red, authorities may search your bags.
• Use the restroom before you leave, restrooms at the border are limited to the U.S. side

The taxis are waiting just 50 feet further. However, you may not want to take a cab; it’s only a few blocks. You can continue walking to Aveneue Revolucion, which is the main shopping area (follow the trail of outside merchants). If you do opt for a cab, beware, they often take tourists the long way to Tijuana.
