Tips on Poland Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Located in the heart of Europe, Poland makes a trip filled with history and romantic places. When you’re there, you will want to keep certain aspects of the country in mind to stay safe.

Poland Warnings and Dangers

Poland is a land of major urban centers and small towns surrounded by forests. You need to be to be aware of the dangers that lurk in both parts of Poland.

Language

Many Poles do not speak English. While German is slightly more useful, it is best to bring a Polish phrase book with you and a list of common Polish signs so you can find your way around more easily.

Driving in Poland

Poland is a fairly large country. If you choose public transportation, you need a ticket. You can buy them on ticket machines or when on the train, bus or tram. If you don’t have one, you can be fined. Public transportation stops at midnight so plan accordingly and be particularly wary of traveling after ten as this is when thieves typically look for targets. While public transport is good, it may not take you into the more rural areas of the country. In that case, a car is useful. When you’re in the city, remember that trams are one of the major forms of big city transportation. They have separate lanes and they have the right of way. While Poland has a drinking culture, you should not participate if you are going to drive as this can lead to all sorts of penalties. Polish roads are not always well maintained. Poland serves a crossroads from Russia to the rest of Europe so it gets heavy traffic.

Warsaw Dangers

Warsaw is the capital of Poland and the nation’s largest city. Certain areas can be dangerous even during the day. Many people recommend avoiding northern part of the Praga district as this is known for high crime rates. In general, it is best to stay in the area by the road that links the old town with Lazienkowski Park and the Downtown area as well as these are areas with more police protection. The area around the main train station can also be troublesome.

Rural Areas

Poland has many lovely areas off the beaten path that are well worth a visit. However, dangers lurk. Vipers and other dangerous snakes are a problem in the Tatra and Bieszczady Mountains. If you are in the mountains during the spring and summer months, you also need to be aware of ticks. Ticks can stick to your clothing and get on your skin where they can cause infection. Wear long clothing if you are planning a forest hike and head to the hospital if you see one as you should not try to remove it on your own.
