Sigiriya is large rock formation, ancient fortress, and one-time Buddhist monastery in Sri Lanka. If you head to Sigiriya, pack comfortable shoes, plenty of water, and confirm that you and the rest of your group are physically prepared for the hike ahead.

Hornets and Monkeys

Upon arrival at Sigiriya, you’ll see several signs warning you about hornets. Thankfully, hornet attacks are rare, but don’t push your luck. Stay on the trail, and don’t swat at hornets if you see them. Like hornets, monkeys also call Sigiriya home. Also like hornets, they won’t harm you if you leave them alone. Travelers and guides warn visitors not to feed them. This only encourages the monkeys and may result in more than a few following you up the trails.

Hiking Conditions

The hike up Sigiriya isn’t suitable for everyone. The trail is steep and there are several stairs to climb to get to the top. At some points, the trail is narrow, rocky, and difficult to navigate. The hills and cliffs around Sigiriya also pose a danger. Many visitors have been hit by falling rocks, including one young tourist who unfortunately died as a result of his injuries. You can hire local guides to help you make it to the top, but they can’t protect you from all of the hazards.
