Safety in Winnipeg in Winnipeg and other Warnings and Dangers

Safety in Winnipeg

Winnipeg has some happening nightlife and fun restaurants to try, and the safety here has improved immensely over the past several years. However, there are still some warnings and dangers that any traveler should know about before they travel to this city.

The North End

This is known as the most dangerous spot of Winnipeg due to its crime levels. There may be prostitutes, gangs, and drug dealers that hang out in this area, depending on when you visit. Travelers advise not to come here alone, and to visit during daylight hours only. Always store valuables either on your person or hidden from sight if you take your car. Also, use a steering wheel immobilizer to lessen your chances of a car theft.

Downtown Winnipeg and the West End

When traveling in Winnipeg, you may be aware of your surroundings as much as possible. The downtown area has more homelessness, but the amount of aggression or violence reported by other fellow travelers is low. The city has put a lot of effort into improving the downtown area. A new police station helps to reinforce to people that these are places for businesses to thrive and for people to blow off steam and try some new food. There’s also a Safewalk service, where you can call for an escort if you feel nervous. There are also certain spots of the West End though that may be better off avoided, such as Ellice Avenue. This area has been noted as a specific place to avoid at night or if you’re alone.

Nightlife and Bars

Canada has some die-hard fans, which makes a sports bar a great place to catch the latest hockey game. However, certain bars are known for hosting patrons who get a little out of control. People like to come to dive bars to have more than a few drinks, and the amount of alcohol consumed can lead to rowdiness and potentially violence. Many of these bars are in the North End, but can find them all over. If you’re concerned, seek out the upscale hotel bars instead of the hole-in-the-wall clubs.

General Safety in Winnipeg

Many of the safety tips are those you would find in any city: try not to walk alone and to use taxis if you get lost or otherwise need to get out of an area fast. The buses do not run as late as the bars are open, so taxis are a necessity in many cases. Ensure you have a plan before you leave your hotel, and know how you’re planning to get around the city. Winnipeg is no more dangerous than any major city. With just a few precautions, you should be able to see what you came to see without any trouble.
