The North Norfolk coast itself extends eastwards from Hunstanton and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is filled with quaint villages, busy towns and plenty of other things to do.

Take a Drive Into the Sea

One of the best ways to get “up close” is to book an amphibious vehicle tour. The vehicles trundle from the promenade and over the sands before launching into the North Sea. A 30-minute cruise along the coast is always well-attended, although an hour’s cruise to the sandbanks to watch the sea lions is also very popular. Times are dependent upon the tides.

Take in the Sea Air

Brits have a tradition, dating back to Victorian times, of taking in the sea air. At the time cities were trying to cope with new heavy industry and the air was dirty. As a result, people suffered all types of ailments, particularly associated with breathing. A trip to the coast was often recommended to get some clean air in. It’s still refreshing today. You can walk along the front for quite literally miles, working your way along the beach. You can hire a pony or just stroll along the seashore. It’s fun to search for crabs in the small pools left by the tide.

When the tide is low, it’s nice to walk along the interesting and colorful cliffs in Old Hunstanton. The cliffs are the region’s most unique feature. They stand about 60 feet tall and are the main tourist attraction.

It’s only a couple of miles along the seafront to walk between the brash “new” Hunstanton and the “old” Hunstanton. The old village is far more genteel, and has a superb beach.

Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary

At the sanctuary, rescued sea creatures are rehabilitated in hopes of someday returning them to the wild. Many are injured, orphaned, or otherwise unable to take care of themselves, but with the proper care and mentoring, they can often go back to their natural environment.

If you’re not that energetic, the stately homes of Sandringham (the Queen’s private residence) and Holkham hall are nearby. Walsingham (England’s ‘Nazareth’) is a short drive away, as is the Thursford collection.  Other things to do include seeing old castles, an early 14^th century church or an 18^th century Palladian-style mansion. For something different, explore the lavender farm.
