Knowing what to pack when traveling to Santa Catalina is important because, being surrounded by water, the temperatures can fluctuate during all seasons on this California island.

Luggage and Bags

Take as little as possible! Unless you are staying for more than the day, try to only take a beach bag. You can’t bring your car here, and 80 percent of hotels are within 300 yards from the ferry terminal. So don’t pack what you can’t carry walking 300 yards. Otherwise, you will need a taxi or golf cart just to get to your hotel. Most people bring just a lightweight backpack for a 3-day stay. Most things you need you can get on the island anyway.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear

Come in shorts and a t-shirt, but also pack pants and a light jacket, sweater or sweatshirt – the ride to Catalina is chilly enough. Plus, after the sun goes down, it can get pretty cold in the evenings too. Overall, the weather on the island is similar to southern California, so plan to dress comfortably and dress for the season (but keep in mind that chilliness at night). If you enjoy hiking, be sure to bring a pair of hiking boots or tennis shoes because there are some great trails. You’ll also want to tote along a pair of comfortable flip flops too. And, in case you want to go swimming or snorkeling, be sure to toss a bathing suit into your bag.

Definitely bring your camera and, if you plan to get wet or snorkel, be sure it’s one that is waterproof. But don’t worry if you don’t have one, you can buy a one-time-use underwater camera for about a buck more than it costs on the mainland. Don’t forget to bring extra memory cards or lots of film – there’s so much to see! Remember to pack your charger or extra batteries too.

The four campgrounds on Catalina Island are equipped, and there’s a Von’s grocery on Catalina Island to get your food supplies and soap/shampoo. You will definitely need sunscreen, it’s easy to forget how hot the sun is here! Also pack a hat or visor because most hikes here have no shade. If you decide to go swimming or snorkeling, you’ll need a beach towel too.
