Sydney has a wide variety of shopping opportunities to enjoy that include large department stores, shopping mall complexes, charming specialty stores, and small fashionable boutiques.

Australian Arts

Aboriginal art is a nice thing to buy in Sydney. The Aboriginal Art Shop located on the Upper Concourse of the Sydney Opera House has a nice selection of items. The Australian Museum Store is another nice shop. For contemporary Australia art, the Ken Duncan Gallery is popular.

Queen Victoria Building

Rich in history and architecturally splendid, the Queen Victoria Building (QVB) occupies an entire block on Sydney’s George Street. The QVB has over 180 of Sydney’s finest fashion boutiques, jewelry shops, and shops selling homewares, accompanied by delightful cafes and restaurants.

The grand building, built in the 1890s was erected as a Municipal Market on the scale of a cathedral. The QVB was beautifully restored and re-opened in 1986, and quickly became Sydney’s most popular and prestigious shopping center.

Birkenhead Point

Birkenhead Point is a shopping center full of brand name stores and factory outlets where you can buy merchandise at discount prices. Major department and specialty stores are represented here and offer end of season stock or goods that did not sell in the city stores.

Darling Harbour

This area has plenty of nice shops and the large Harbourside Shopping Center with over 150 stores on two levels selling great gifts, duty-free items, and exotic jewelry. There are restaurants, novelty entertainment stores, and the latest in men’s and women’s fashion.

Oxford Street

Oxford Street has numerous stores catering to all types of tastes. There are stores for women’s fashion, men’s fashion, adult sex stores, boutique clothing stores, and women’s lingerie. The shopping area stretches from Hyde Park to Paddington.

The Rocks

If you’re looking for a place that’s a bit different from your typical souvenir shop, try the Harbour Rocks Store. Located in The Rocks area of Sydney, this little store sells native gifts like boomerangs and aboriginal pendants and bracelets.

Wombat at The Rocks is one of the many cute little shops in The Rocks area. The shop sells quality Australian items such as hats, shoes, bags and accessories. They have a large selection of Ugg items, ear muffs, and gloves; so warm for the cold winters as well as Jacaru hats.

Department Stores

Meyer’s is a department store that is much like Macy’s in the USA. It has a nice selection of fashion clothes and housewares. Woolworth’s is a department store with plenty of bargains.

Shopping Malls

Chatswood is a nice suburb in northern Sydney. There are two shopping centers, Chatswood Chase and Westfield Shopping Town and a number of stores in this area. This area is a nice diversion from shopping in downtown Sydney.

Pitt Street has a pedestrian-only mall with two major department stores, Myer-Grace Bros and nearby, David Jones. David Jones is worth visiting for its fabulous food hall with its exceptional oyster bar and exclusive delicacies to take away.
