Shopping in Goa: Flea-Street Markets
No trip to Goa is complete without a trip to at least one of the bustling and colorful street markets there. Each market provides a slightly different experience, so knowing what you’re looking for and what to expect will help you decide which markets you will visit.
Anjuna Market Offers Something for Everyone
A popular destination for tourists, Anjuna Market is open every Wednesday during the high season from around 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This massive market is full of vendors from all over India, making it a great destination for tourists who aren’t traveling to other areas to purchase Rajasthani or Tibetan artifacts to take home. You’ll experience colorful sights, fragrant smells and a cacaphony of sounds at Anjuna Market. From colorful clothing, jewelry, herbs, spices, local handicrafts, food, nic-nacs, and more, you can find just about anything you can think of there.
Ingo and Mapusa Markets Offer Authentic Market Experiences
The Ingo and Mapusa Markets offer a more authentic Goan experience if you’re looking for markets that are both less commercialized than the Anjuna Market and a little more off of the beaten path for tourists. Mapusa Market is open Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There, you will find everything from produce, spices, food, clothing and more. This market is a great way to experience local color.
Also known as the Arpora Night Market, Ingo’s Night Market is a unique experience. The Night Market is held every Saturday night, starting at 6:00 p.m. and ending at 2:00 a.m. Ingo’s Night Market offers an exciting, fair-like experience for travelers. You’ll find entertainment, food, drink and many different shops. This lively event is truly an experience of a lifetime.
Tips and Tricks for Goa Flea-Street Markets
It may be hot and humid at the market, so be sure to bring your own water or buy drinks from one of the many shops that sell them. To be on the safe side, buy drinks that come in sealed plastic bottles. Before purchasing anything, be sure to inspect the item thoroughly to make sure you are getting a quality item. Bartering and haggling are expected; so don’t be afraid to negotiate with the street vendors to get great prices on your purchases. Keep a price in mind and haggle away.
