Drumheller Things to Do
Drumheller, a small town located in the Alberta Badlands, was once a mining town, but today it’s a major tourist draw. Take a look at the attractions that you must take the time to see when you take a trip to Drumheller.
Royal Tyrell Museum
If you’re fascinated by paleontology or you’re traveling with kids who love learning about dinosaurs, the Royal Tyrell Museum is the place for you to be. The museum is named for geologist Joseph Burr Tyrrell, who first discovered a dinosaur fossil in the valley of the Red Deer River. Inside, you’ll find more than 130,000 fossil specimens on display.
Not only can you can you examine the fossils, which are spread over several galleries with themes that take you through a history of the Earth, you can also get a look inside the lab where the bones are prepared for display or further research. You can’t go in, but you can watch through a window as the scientists work. If you’re looking for something more hands-on, there are also interactive stations where kids and adults can participate in activities. Outside of the museum, there’s an interpretive walk of the Badlands that will allow you to get a good feel for the terrain in the area. You’ll also get a view of the museum and grounds that will make a great picture. Be sure that you have at least several hours to spend in and around the Tyrell Museum.
Little Church
Whether you’re just interested in seeing something unique, or whether you’re in need of a moment of spirituality, the Little Church in Drumheller is definitely worth a visit. Located near the Royal Tyrell museum, a sign at the Little Church boasts that it seats 10,000 – 6 people at a time.
Sure enough, when you walk into the tiny church, you’ll see that it has three one-person pews on each side of the church – just room enough for six. Built in the late 1960s and reconstructed in the early 1990s, the place was built to provide residents and visitors with a place for worship or meditation.
Horseshoe Canyon
The name of this attraction tells you exactly what it is – it’s a canyon that happens to be in the shape of a horseshoe. The canyon is about 3km long, and to reach the bottom of it, you would need to descend about 60 meters.
You can take a helicopter tour of the canyon, which would allow you to get some unique views, or you can travel down one of the canyon’s hiking trails. If you get a chance, visit the canyon early in the morning to enjoy the spectacular view of the sunrise.
Drumheller is a fun and friendly place to visit, with plenty of attractions and entertainment for tourists. Make sure that these attractions are part of your Drumheller itinerary.
