Andaluz

While exploring the Nerja center you might spot Andaluz. The window is full of UK foods just begging you to try them out: Bisto gravy granules, Sharwoods curry sauces, even ‘Chicken Tonight’. The shop, although quite small, stocks Dutch and some German foods in tins, packets, jars, sweets. It keeps pretty busy even in the low season. Foods are a bit more expensive than they would be in the UK but weren’t hugely expensive. The UK/German/Dutch/Scandinavian expat population obviously craves the food of home often enough for such businesses to remain in business. If you have a craving for Heinz beans, Bisto gravy or Dutch liquorice when you’re in Nerja you now know where to get them!

Smiffs

In Nerja there is a good street market every Tuesday morning and even a flea market/car boot sale on Sunday mornings. But for readers and booklovers who visit there is a very well established book shop that sells a wide variety of English books and newspapers.  It used to be called W.H. Smiffs according to a sandwich board that once stood at the entrance to the small arcade where it is located. If you run out of reading material this is definitely the spot to stop during your travels.

Street Shops

There are many little arts and crafts shops both on the above street, (C/ Cristo becomes C/ A. Ferrandiz further down), and Calle Pintada. This is known as “the lanes” because of the narrow width of the area. Don’t be fooled into thinking this means its only for pedestrians however. Traffic is allowed, so watch where you walk. Still they are pleasant little streets and shops stay open until quite late in Spain, so you can browse at night if you wish to.
