Mykonos Town 

A great place to start is at Mykonos Town. Called Chora by locals, this is a charming place of intense white and blues and narrow side streets. Grab a cup of coffee and watch the local life. There are many churches here worth a visit including the Church of Panagia Paraportiani. Dating back to the 15th century, this church is one of the most photographed in Greece. It’s actually five separate buildings. Several of them are underground, making it a good place to retreat at the height of the summer heat. The area by the water is called Little Venice Town. It’s on the waterfront so you can watch fishing boats. This is a popular place to watch the sun go down and have an authentic Greek meal. Look for the five windmills here. They are icons of the town and make the perfect place for a selfie. Along the waterfront you might see pelicans. These huge birds flock to the waterfront during the day and may let you get close enough to pose for a photo with them.

The Beaches 

Beaches are one of the main attractions in Mykonos. For a beach close to Myknonos Town, try Ornos Beach. It’s crowded in summer but it’s only a ten minute ride by public bus. Another close beach is Plats Yialos Beach. This one is compact and good for families with relatively shallow waters. There are beach tavernas here so you can have a meal right on the beach. If you like water sports try Panormous Beach. Less crowded than some other spaces, it’s a favorite haunt of locals. Slightly farther away from Myknonos Town is Elia Beach. It’s quieter and more secluded. You can also more easily get a sun umbrella and place to sit. This is where many wealthy Greeks choose to keep a second home so it’s rather upscale. If you’re young and looking for a party, try Paradise and Super Paradise Beach. You can to both get via a short ferry ride. It’s party central during the summer and the place to be if you want to be in the center of the action. The clear water is adjacent to miles of sand and lots of bars. You will pay a small fee for the use of beach chair so bring a blanket if you want to avoid that. The party begins early in the morning and continues well into the night.
