Schaffhausen, located in northern Switzerland, is a town of nearly 40,000 people. While here, you’ll have plenty of transportation options, from trains and trolleys to taxis, boats, and rental cars.

Swiss Travel Pass

For a few hundred Euros, you can purchase a Swiss Travel Pass. This can be used on trains, buses, boats, as long as they are part of the Swiss transportation system. If you’re in Switzerland for more than a few days, this is the most affordable option. Before you head to Switzerland, talk to your travel agent and your hotel staff. Trolley Buses

In town, hop on the trolley buses that run from the city center to the outskirts. These buses run regular trips to nearby Rhine Falls, as well as adjacent cities and towns. If you plan on staying in the center of town, you should be able to use the trolley buses for most of your transportation needs.

Rental Car

If you really want to see Switzerland, rent a car. Schaffhausen is surrounded by stunning hills, forests, and lakes. Having a vehicle allows you to make your own schedule and is the only way to reach some of the more remotes areas. Rental cars may be preferred over rail passes if you plan on staying in Schaffhausen for a short time. The rentals are affordable and you’ll have the added bonus of being able to avoid long lines at the train station.
