Transportation in Baltimore: Light Rail

Heading to Baltimore for a weekend getaway? Luckily, the Light Rail makes transportation around the city easy and affordable.

BWI Airport

Getting from the airport to the city could not be simpler. Inside of the airport you will find ticket kiosks near the baggage area. Pick up a $1.60 ticket from BWI to the city and you’ll be checking in to your hotel in no time. Trains run every 20 minutes or so from the airport so if you miss a train there will be another one right around the corner. The train ride from BWI to Camden Station is approximately 25 minutes.

Penn Station

To get to Penn Station, get off at the University of Baltimore/Mt Royal stop, and pick up the connector train or walk. Make sure to take a “Penn Station” train and not a Timonium/Hunt Valley train to the end of the line. Allow about 45 minutes to get from BWI to Penn Station, including the transfer to the shuttle train.

Around Town

If you don’t know your way around Baltimore, the Light Rail is an excellent way to see the city. You can purchase a day pass for $3.50 or a weekly pass for $16.50. You’ll see trains stopping in downtown about every 10 minutes and they are generally punctual. The service runs from Hunt Valley, in Baltimore County, through Baltimore City, and finally terminates in Glen Burnie in Anne Arundel County. There are 32 stops along the route so you can easily stop to shop in downtown and then go check out the Baltimore Orioles stadium.
