Collioure Things to Do
Collioure is a sea side commune of France, located directly on the water. With beaches galore and deep historic roots, there is something for everyone to enjoy while visiting Collioure. Below, we have outlined some highlighted points of interest while visiting Collioure.
Fort Saint-Elme
This historic fort was built between 1538 and 1552 by French King, Charles V. Built with incredibly thick and solid walls, this fort is located overlooking the water. From the top of the fort, visitors can enjoy fantastic views of the city. The fort is open for most of the year, but is closed from mid-November to mid-February each year. During the summer months, the fort stays open until 7 pm. Admission to the fort is 6 Euro for adults and children under the age of 12 are free.
Beaches
There are several public beaches to relax and swim around Collioure. The two main beaches are located on either side of the Château and the breakwater. The beach on the Château side has several restaurants and cafes that tourists can stop at for lunch or dinner. Plus, there are several local artists painting who don’t mind if you admire their work from over their shoulder. From the beach visitors can watch fishing boats and sail boats regularly come in and out of the harbor.
Château Royal de Collioure
The castle was built on Roman foundations and seems to be built right out of the water. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the King of Mallorca called the castle home. In the 16th and 17th century, the kings of Aragon, Spain and France regularly fought over the right to control the castle. Since 1951 the castle has been open to the public, Tours run year round and are open longer in July and August until 7:00 pm. Tours are 4 Euros for adults.
