Central Station in Milan and Other Warnings and Dangers

Warnings and Dangers in Milan – Central Station

Milan Central Station is a busy hub for public transportation, and this means that you want to keep your eyes open for potential issues. As at any train station, it is important to keep eyes on your bags and take note of where security is located in addition to adhering to these safety tips from travelers.

Avoid “Helpers”

Some people pretending to be helpful will lurk by the ticket machines, offering to guide you through the process. In reality, the machines are very easy to use and have English language versions anyway. It is very unlikely that you will need any help at all. If you accept their help, they wilil want you to pay for it. Just say “No, grazie,” very firmly and ignore them. Generally, these individuals are not likely to become aggressive if you tell them you do not want their help.

Beggars

You will find beggars, mostly women, hanging out around the entrances to Milano Centrale, particularly the one which leads to the airport buses, begging. Some of these individuals sleep across the street from the station, and you may see beggars digging through trash cans or urinating outside the station. It is up to you whether you give them anything; however, it is common for European Union countries to offer adequate welfare benefits for its residents. Fortunately, there is always a police presence at the station if you feel uncomfortable. On the downside, some travlers have reported that security may have a bias toward people who cannot speak Italian. If you feel threatened, it is still important to find a police officer.

Stolen Bags and Change

Some travelers have reported luggage stolen from trains and platforms at Milan Central Station, and some have claimed that their change has been stolen from metro ticket vending machines. For this reason, many people choose to visit the ticket counter rather than the machines. It is important to beware of anyone who approaches you at the ticket machines in Central Station. Some travelers report that unsavory characters have passed by them at the station and leaned in to grab change before instantly disappearing in the crowd.

As for luggage, make sure that you keep your eyes on your bags at all times, even when you are still on the train. Luggage has disappeared from the carry-on rack before, and your only hope is often to report the stolen baggage when you arrive at your final destination, which may be very far from Milan.

Most travelers who pass through Milan Central Station never report a problem. Still, it is important that you are cautious while passing through this bustling hub.
