Lindisfarne Warnings and Dangers
Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, is a tidal island located off the coast of Northumberland. Prepare for your visit there by exploring some warnings about the dangers you might encounter in the area.
Getting to The Island
The main danger you’re likely to face in Lindisfarne is simply getting onto the island in the first place. Lindisfarne is a tidal island, which means that the entrances to the island are profoundly affected by the tide.
There are a few ways to get to the island. One is to take the causeway that connects Lindisfarne to the mainland. During high tide, this causeway is covered with water and is not safe to cross. As a result, the causeway is closed between during those times. Trying to cross when the causeway is closed could result in you getting stranded and needing to be rescued (and in serious water damage to your vehicle). Get the tidal times from a newspaper or the Lindisfarne website and plan your trip around them.
Another way to get to the island is on foot. There is a walking route across a series of sandflats that exist between the island and the mainland, and there are posts that mark the path for those who travel on foot. This is known as the Pilgrim’s Crossing. However, it’s important to remember that this path is also affected by the tide, and crossing can be dangerous if you get the tide times wrong. It is strongly recommended that if you choose to go on foot, you only do so with the help of an experienced guide.
Parking
Lindisfarne is a small island with very narrow roads and very limited parking. When you enter the island, you’ll be directed to a car park where you can pay to park while you explore the area.
These warnings will help you prepare for an enjoyable trip to Lindisfarne.
