Giethoorn Things to Do
The lovely village of Giethoorn is sparsely populated, but sits in some of the most beautiful country in the Netherlands. Although not a very active city, there are still a few things to do when visiting.
Boating
A fun way to tour the canals of Giehoorn is to rent a Whisper Boat, which is an open air boat equipped with a silent electric motor. The quiet noise level is where the nickname ‘whisper’ comes from. You are given very easy instructions on how to handle the engine, and you’re also provided with navigation maps of the canals. Another boating option is the use of a punter, which is like a gondola. You move these boats by pushing a pole along the bottom of the canal.
Museums
The Museum De Oude Aarde was founded in 1969. The founder, Rene Boissevain, travelled to all parts of the world to gather specimens for the unique collection of minerals now in the museum. Presently, the Visser family runs the museum. They also travel around the world looking for beautiful crystals to add to the extensive collection.
Another place to visit is the museum Het Olde Maat. This museum farmhouse was rebuilt in 1988 and redecorated in an old style. It creates the impression of what life was like in Giethoorn 100 years ago. In the stable is an exposition about life was like in that time.
