Crete Island Warnings and Dangers
Crete Island can be a stunningly beautiful place, but there are some things to heed while you are there. If you are planning an upcoming trip to Crete Island, make sure you know these tips on Crete warnings and dangers so that you can stay safe.
Be Careful While Driving
Driving can be dangerous anywhere you go, but while driving on Crete Island, you need to be extra attentive. Drivers in this area drive like they are on the German Autobahn, even if they are on a winding road. If you are happy with the speed you are going, it’s best to stay on the shoulder of the road so that other drivers can get past you. It is also important to pay attention while crossing roads in your vehicle, as other drivers will pass without much visibility or on windy roads and even go around into oncoming traffic lanes.
It is also important to note that while on Crete Island, you need and International Drivers License. If you find yourself in an accident or getting pulled over, any insurance that you have brought over with you (and your driver’s license) are considered void. These can be obtained to protect you at AAA or other driving organizations. Make sure you get insurance and an International Drivers License before you rent a car!
Be careful of some of the roads on the island as well, many of them are extremely narrow, making passing difficult. Some are also very worn down or falling apart, so it is important to drive as you feel comfortable on these roads to avoid any accidents.
Walking and Hiking
If you are heading up to hike or walk in the mountains, especially in Samaria Gorge, there are a few things you need to know before you go. It is important to make sure you bring plenty of water, wear good shoes, and be very cautious of falling rocks. There are many warning signs in the area and they are there for a reason because people have been killed by falling rocks.
Furthermore, in addition to being well equipped, it is important to stay on the designated path and to be careful of wandering too far off of it. Tourists have been found dead or in need of emergency care while losing their way in the Samaria Gorge. Actual hiking shoes are very important, as mentioned above because it is easy to twist your ankle or even break a bone on the rubble. Having good, solid shoes under your feet can prevent this injury from occurring.
If you are headed towards any caves, it is not a wise idea to hike above them, as you can trigger falling rock or even fall and be killed or seriously injured.
