Transportation in Amman: Buses
Getting around Amman can be a bit of a challenge. Here’s everything you need to know about getting around Amman by bus.
Traveling Into and Out of Amman
You’ll have to take a bus if you want to go out of Amman. There are three bus stations, and they all service different areas. Generally speaking, the North stop services areas to the North, and so on. The buses don’t operate on a schedule. Instead, they leave when the bus is full, so you may have to wait up to two hours for the bus to leave. They run more often in the early morning, and some buses shut down after noon. The West station is about a fifteen minute walk from downtown, and the other two are easily reachable by taxi.
Buses in the City
There are two options for buses in the city. Big buses have line numbers and bus stops. You can find someone at the bus station who can tell you which line to take. Police officers are also familiar with the routes, and they can give you information as well.
The small buses have a boy in the door shouting the route and collecting the bus fees. These buses stop anywhere along the route.
Bus Culture
Women aren’t allowed to sit next to men on Amman buses. In the small buses, the boy that takes the travel fees will arrange the passengers so that the woman has an appropriate seat. On the large buses, you drop the travel fee into a clear box beside the driver. It helps to know a few phrases in Arabic when you are trying to travel in Amman, because they speak very little English. The Arabic name of the place you are trying to reach, street names, and nearby landmarks are all helpful .
