Borjomi Transportation
There are multiple ways to get to and around Borjomi, a resort town in the Republic of Georgia known for its mineral water industry. Public transportation in Borjomi is inexpensive and the city is also very walkable.
Getting to and from Borjomi
Public transportation to and from Borjomi is available by bus and rail, although bus transportation via minibus (mashrutka) is most common. Most minibuses leave from around the Rustaveli Square, located on the left bank of the river Mktvari. Hourly minibuses travel between Borjomi and Tbilisi, and regular minibuses provide inexpensive transportation to other Georgian cities as well. Train travel is also an option between Borjomi and Bakuriani or Tbilisi. There is a narrow-gauge railroad to Bakuriani, nicknamed the “kukushka,” whose train is small (two passenger cars) and something of an antique, but provides a beautiful and inexepensive trip. This train leaves from the Borjomi #2 station, called Chernaya Rechka, located in the northern outskirts of the city, along Rustaveli Street. Borjomi’s other train, to Tblisi, leaves from the historic main station, located at Borjomi Park, which still displays the timetable from the much busier Soviet era!
Traveling within Borjomi
Borjomi is a very walkable city, and is best explored on foot. The city is full of tourist and hiking trails, marked with signposts, and signs include distances and walking times to various destinations. For more recreational transportation within Borjomi, there is the cable car, located just within Borjomi’s Mineral Water Park, which provides a ride up the nearby mountainside for a beautiful view. Cable car tickets may be round-trip, or one-way for those who prefer to walk back down the mountain.
