Konstanz is a moderately-sized city that is home to the University of Konstanz. Although not a massive tourist destination, there is plenty to see and things to do when in the region.

Lakefront Promenade

Konstanz has a superb lakefront that provides almost endless opportunities for outdoor activities. Cyclists, rollerskaters, and pedestrians make good use of the well-constructed promenade. Heartier souls indulge in a range of water sports. The promenade begins with some very beautiful, turn-of-the-century townhouses. Along the walk, you’ll also find gardens built in later periods and beautiful houses of all styles that dominate the area.

City Towers

Three of the city towers that were once part of the fortifications are still preserved. Two of them are directly by the Rhine river, at the northern end of the old town. The western of the two towers is called Powder Tower. It was built 1321 by the local Jewish population as their contribution to the construction of the city’s fortifications. The Rheintorturm, situated beside the River Rhine, was used as a defensive tower and a bridge gate. Today, the Rheintortum houses the Constance Carnival Museum. There, you can see 40 life-sized carnival figures and find background information about the Carnival.

Minster Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady is a minor basilica located in Cathedral Square. Built in a mix of the Romanesque and Gothic style, this three-aisled basilica was consecrated in 1089. Over the years, it has been altered many times with new architectural styles.
