Puerto Escondido Warnings or Dangers
A visit to Puerto Escondido means great food, beaches, sunshine, and dancing, but in order to have as much fun as possible be aware of the dangers.
Beware of These Possible Dangers in Puerto Escondido
Waves
Just be cautious if you swim in the waves, the undertow can be quite strong. Watch for the signals from lifeguards, and pay attention to the colours of the flags – red is dangerous, yellow is moderately dangerous and green is safe. Even in the green zone, the current swiped the goggle set right off my head and carried it out to sea. Something to think about if you’re wearing lose swimwear or jewellery, etc. Playa Zicatela has one of the biggest waves in the world. And even when they are small they break with great force. So don’t swim there when the waves are breaking, and when they are not breaking, just swim if there are lifeguards. The rips are still strong and can sweep you out the ocean.
Only one Local ATM Machine
Beware! There is only one easily accessible ATM machine at Zicatela beach, and it broke while I was there, not to be repaired until the following Monday. We had to take a cab into the city to find an ATM machine. Be sure to bring plenty of cash.
Late Night Beach Jaunts
There have been problems in the past with muggings. One occasion in 1997 there was the murder of a tourist on the beach late at night. Whilst the authorities have provided improved lighting in the Municipal Beach area, it is advised against walking on the beach, particularly alone, late at night.
Be Aware of These Issues
You are in Mexico, and there are a few thing to pay attention too while in Puerto. Don’t walk alone in the dark on the beach, you can be beat up, robbed all the things. Don’t take drugs from people, they could be undercover agents. Don’t carry too much money with you, leave your wallet passport and all in the safe of the hotel, and just take the money you want to spend. And It is Mexico, so there are scorpions, so always check your shoes and bags and clothes before putting them on on sticking your hand to it, even though a sting won’t kill you if you are healthy, they do hurt and the worst ones will make you sick.
