Shenzhen Warnings and Dangers
Shenzhen has the highest crime rate in China therefore travelers should take some special precautions in order to have a safe trip. China is a safe country in comparison with many other countries, including European countries, so just pay a little more attention in order to prevent any unwanted events.
Pickpockets
The main crime that foreigners face is pickpocketing. Be careful on the crowded streets, in shopping areas, and especially on public transportation like metro and buses. Metro is the most convenient mode of city transport in Shenzhen, so keep an eye on your belongings while traveling. Be confident when you are in public. Even it’s your first trip, make strangers believe that you are experienced in the city – this may discourage them from targeting you.
Visa
Make sure you secure your Shenzhen VISA from your home country. Starting Apr. 21, 2008, they only issue Shenzhen Visa at the Lo Wu border if you have a Hong Kong ID.
Language Barrier
Wherever you go or whatever you want to do, try to get written cards in Mandarin to help locals understand what you want. Ask the hotel staff or local friends who can write Mandarin to write down the address you want to visit, the name of the food you like, the souvenir you want to buy, the shop you are looking for, etc.
It can be frustrating when someone doesn’t understand your request, and it’s easy to show your written card and get what you want.
