Oslo – What to Pack – Clothing and Supplies Tips

Oslo What to Pack

When traveling to Oslo, you might need to be creative in your packing because the weather is very unpredictable, yet you won’t want to be overloaded carrying too much baggage. Here’s what else you need to know.

Luggage and Bags

Suitcases are good if you’re staying in hotels and have organized transportation from place to place. Backpacks are great if you’re being more adventurous and staying in hostels or going camping. Try to take only what you will need so you don’t weigh yourself down with excess.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear

Oslo weather changes regularly and throughout most of the year you can experience different seasons in short periods of time. It might even snow in June.

Spring/Fall – It can be quite cold, generally pack warmer clothes than what you wear at home unless you come from the same type of climate.

Summer – Pack shorts and t-shirts, but also think layers because it still gets cold, especially at night. A jacket or sweater is a must.

Winter – It’s very cold and windy so definitely bring warm clothing – thermals, flannels, thick socks, hats, gloves, scarves and a heavy coat.

Also plan to pack comfortable shoes for walking.  There is no specific rainy season and it can rain frequently, bring a raincoat, rubber boots and an umbrella. Tuck a pair of sunglasses into your bag too for any sunny days.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies

Be sure to bring your personal medications. You can get most anything at a pharmacy in Oslo but it is expensive and, depending on what you need, you might have to see a doctor. OTC meds in other countries are often prescriptions in Norway. Also, pack sunscreen, lip balm and moisturizer.

Miscellaneous

Pick up a free Oslo Guide at one of the Tourist Information Offices – it has lots of great information. Pack a 2-pin electric plug adaptor with you, Norway uses the Europlug (Type C & F). If you plan to go camping, bring a good tent and bug repellant. If you bring your pet, be aware it’s not easy to find a vet clinic in Norway so bring pet medical supplies, especially if you are exploring wooded areas. For photography, you won’t need anything fancy, bring your smartphone, tablet or small camera (although, you might want a wide angle, and a polarizer for sunny days). Also bring cash, especially if you plan to eat out or enjoy the nightlife.
