Solo Travel Itinerary around Lake Ontario

Author: solotraveler
Date of Trip: April 2010

Oh my, this was a good trip.

I left on a Sunday to travel solo around Lake Ontario. Some days were packed with things to do, others were more about the journey — cycling and driving. Here’s my itinerary.

SUNDAY, April 18th

7:30 a.m.
I left for Prince Edward County early, taking the 401 east from Toronto all the way because I had to be there on the early side.

10:30 a.m. — 1:30 p.m.
Cooking Class — Professional Kitchen Basics with Chef Kelly Atwells at The Waring House Cookery School

The afternoon I toured Prince Edward County wineries.

* Redtail Vineyard (an off grid Winery) * Closson Chase (owned by actress Sonja Smits and her husband) * Huff Estates Winery and Vineyard (also the location for Oeno Gallery) * Grange of Prince Edward (largest Pinot planting in the area. I love a good Pinot.)

I then checked into the Moonlight on the Lake B&B. As the name suggests, this B&B offers lake views. Very nice.

Dinner
I had a lovely meal at East and Main Bistro featuring local food and wine.

MONDAY, April 19th

Morning
This was a work morning — I had lots of writing to do so I settled in at Miss Lilies, a hub for coffee and freelancers in Picton.

Afternoon
I followed the Prince Edward County Arts Trail which is nicely laid out in a map available at any touristy location.

That night I stayed at Browns Bed and Breakfast in a wonderfully restored old mansion. I think it was my favorite B&B of the entire trip.

7:30 p.m.
Dinner at Blumen Garden Bistro — fabulous food and a very friendly owner whose daughter participates for fun.

TUESDAY, April 20th

Morning
I went to the amazing Fifth Town Artisan Cheese for cheese making. What an experience. I’m now totally inspired to try to make cheese on my own.

Noon
I left for Kingston taking the Glenora-Adolphustown Ferry and then The Loyalists Parkway (Highway 33) along the lake to Kingston.

3 p.m.
I checked into the Rosemount Inn and Spa where I thought I would take things a bit slower but, not so. I took in a dance performance that night at the Grand Theatre.

WEDNESDAY, April 21th

All day I brought my bike with me on this trip so, with the weather being good I rode: * The downtown area. * Out to the Prison Museum * The Waterfront Trail on the way back from the museum. * Wolfe Island — a short, free, ferry ride from downtown and you’re in the country.

Evening
My hostess at the Rosemount directed me to Martinis and Manicures which are on offer Wednesday nights at the Tango on Queen Street. I followed that up with dinner at Le Chien Noir which is right around the corner. This is restaurant is highly recommended on Chowhound and I can confirm that it is well worth it.

THURSDAY, April 22nd

I left for the American side of Lake Ontario. My destination was Rochester, NY via the Thousand Islands Bridge, Route 81 south to Route 90 west. I wandered further south and meandered through the Finger Lakes for a while before focusing in on Rochester by my B&B, Dartmouth House where I settled in for a quiet evening.

FRIDAY, April 23rd

Morning
Again, I was on my bike. I started at George Eastman House a world renowned museum of photography and film. I then rode to Java’s for lunch where I met a fellow who confirmed my plans for an afternoon ride.

Afternoon
I cycled the Genesee Riverway Trail which goes through the city to the Lake — though I didn’t go that far. 🙂

Evening
What an evening. I went to Hogan’s Hideaway on Park Avenue which was close to my B&B for a bite to eat. Sitting at the bar I met a couple, got chatting and they invited me to join them for dinner. We had a fabulous evening — they even paid. The kindness of strangers can be overwhelming at times.

SATURDAY, April 24th

10 a.m.
Before leaving Rochester I had some work to do. I participated in a webinar with the Global Bloggers Network.

11 a.m.
I left Rochester for Niagara-on-the-Lake following the parkway back into Ontario.

4:30 p.m.
Check in at the Brockamour Manor B&B

6:15 p.m.
Chef’s Table Dinner at Peller Estates Winery Restaurant with celebrity Winery Chef Jason Parsons. I am so thrilled to have had this opportunity. What an evening.

SUNDAY, April 25th

10:00 a.m.
Wine Country Cooking School located within the Strewn Winery. I’m always eager to learn more. We made Thai Spring Rolls, I had a tour of the winery and picked up a few bottles.

2:00 p.m.
I enjoyed a matinee performance at the Shaw Festival — An Ideal Husband. The Shaw Festival can be counted on for great theater.

Then home to Toronto.

Fabulous!

My thanks goes to Taste The County (Prince Edward Country), Tourism Kingston, Visit Rochester and Niagara on the Lake — Tourism Niagara for their help with this trip. I have written about many portions of this trip in detail on Solo Traveler.
