Luscious Nassau, Bahamas

My family and I stayed in Nassau, Bahamas for a week during the month of May, the ‘rainy season’. We selected this month because it is not as hot as in the peak summer months. We stayed during the week of May 18, 2010 in a private home, which I found online. It was the perfect selection with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths for 5 people.

The home was clean, inviting and comfortable and the free use of a car for getting around. Of course, with driving on the left, we passed on the car and instead found getting around by taxi was the best option for us. The house had all of the amenities for a comfortable stay.

The homeowner took us to the market and liquor stores to stock up. She was simply wonderful. She also offered to take us around if we needed a ride since none of us had the nerve to drive. Be aware that since alot of stuff is imported, prices are about double what you pay in the US.

The first day we arrived, our taxi driver, who owns her own transportation service Cheryl’s Taxi & Tours showed us around the town, just so we could get a glimpse of where we were, and specific landmarks in case we wanted to drive. She offered to give us a tour of the island for a very reasonable price and we accepted. The tour was excellent. She was informative and detailed. Not to mention her van was comfotable and accommodating. If we wanted to go somewhere, just give her an hour and she would pick us up. Her prices were very reasonable.

Before you get in a taxi, good advice is to ask the rate before you get in. We found that the fares were just about the same for where we travelled.

It rained intermittent showers the first two days we were there; but after that, it was all sunshine,blues skies and 3-H days…HAZY, HOT and HUMID.

Our family went to the places most talked about when visiting Nassau: Arawak Cay (fish fry, which was alot of fun), Potters Cay, which we purchased fresh fish and conch and got the shell for FREE, Paradise Island to see Atlantis (overpriced and all hype), various beaches, Cable, Cabbage, Love, the straw market, and downtown.

To get a taste of Bahamian cooking, we went to the Travellers Rest Restaurant. The food was good with nice sized portions, the drinks were good and the location was across from the water…you could wade to your ankles if you wanted, but there were many rocks. The view was spectacular, especially at sunset.

In my opinion, the best way to economically stay/see in Nassau for a week or longer is to rent a house, or stay in a residential neighborhood. Unless you want to spend alot of money daily on restaurants, hotels, etc., go to the market and liquor stores, cook most of your meals, take the jitneys and occasional taxi; unless you are brave enough to drive and have a blast as my family and I did.

By staying the way we did, we made new friends and now keep in touch to revisit.
