It was our first time to Charleston, South Carolina. We went for a family wedding and were told that late September is a perfect time to visit – lower temperatures and humidity, and less tourists.

It was a long plane trip from Denver as there are only”change planes” to get to Charleston. We had great shuttle service from the airport. The driver is studying to be a tour guide, and gave us a huge list of historic properties to visit as well as an incredible speaking tour all the way from the airport to downtown Charleston.

The city has an amazing amount of historical buildings and events. Definitely take the carriage tour (ours was about an hour; I believe there is a longer one available). You can walk the city over and over. Be sure to visit the house museums, the churches, the synagogue, the BATTERY. And definitely visit the College of Charleston — great library.

You’ll find some very fine dining and all sorts of price ranges as well as a variety of foods. There are lots of seafood places. You’ll also find some very fine shops. There is a great used book store, unusual clothing stores and some good shoes stores.

Be sure to take “Off” or some other bug repellent with you, especially for when the humidity is high. While we were there, every living chigger found me and they make mosquitos seem harmless!

The city is a must for history buffs and is somewhat reminiscent of old London with the narrow cobblestone streets. HAVE FUN!
