A relaxing southern escape (Savannah, Georgia)

Author: kay dorrance
Date of Trip: September 2007

I travel with my two sisters and it is often difficult to find a bed and breakfast establishment with two double beds in a room. I searched extensively for such a B&B when we decided to visit Savannah Georgia for a short trip. I found the perfect place; The Dresser Palmer House on Gaston Street. I almost hesitate to praise its merits but, based on the reviews I have seen, the secret is out!

My sisters and I selected their Confederate Jasmine room which is in their basement. Luckily that fact did not dissuade us from making the booking and I believe we found a little gem in Savannah’s historic district.

Our room was entirely made of brick (all four walls) and only one small window in a door exiting to the front of the B&B. However, we found the room to be extremely cosy and quite quaint. We had access to all the common areas within the B&B but that door with the small window also provided us our own outdoor access and additional privacy. Our room also had an outdoor access to the courtyard and for four nights we felt like it was our private and secluded getaway.

The breakfast is described on their web side as gourmet and it will not disappoint. We were served french toast with a bananas Foster topping on the first morning – fruit stuffed crepes on our last. In addition to the main course, there are muffins, cereals, an assortment of teas and flavored shots for ones coffee. It was a great start to a full day in Savannah and we never needed lunch.

In the evenings we returned to a social hour with wine, cheese, crackers and great conversation with the other guests (if you are so inclined). This was the best part of the day as we relaxed and chatted for awhile and then eventually found ourselves back in ‘our courtyard’ discussing activities for the next day while finishing our wine.

Each employee of The Dresser Palmer House is ready to serve and please. We were offered all sorts of suggestions for Savannah tours and site seeing tips. Of course, they will make all arrangements for you including pickup at the B&B etc.

We regretted leaving Savannah but I think we regretted leaving the Dresser Palmer House more. I believe this B&B defines Southern hospitality and I cannot wait to get back to the Dresser Palmer House and Savannah for another (hopefully longer) stay!!
