When To Go

Slovakia has four seasons and diverse geography with different altitudes. The most popular times to visit are the summer for general tourism and the winter in the mountains, with spring and autumn still receiving a good number of visitors. March through October is a popular time for city tourism and outdoor activities, while November through May is a busy time for areas with winter sports and thermal spas. Hotels fill up around Christmas and New Year's.

December through April is also high season for ski areas.

Weather Information

Slovakia has a temperate climate with four seasons. Daily temperatures average 28 degrees in winter and 70 degrees in summer. The coldest month is January and the warmest months are July and August. Snow falls around 130 days per year in the high elevations.

Crowd Information

Slovakia receives the most crowds during the summer. Many events throughout the year, particularly in Bratislava, attract crowds such as Mozart's Week (February), Junifest (June), Christmas Market (November/December), and New Year's Eve.

Closure Information

Hotels, shops, and other venues can close on special events and holidays such as New Year's Day, The Epiphany (January 6), May Day (May 1), the commemoration of the end of WWII in Europe (May 8), Holiday of St. Cyril and St. Metodius (July 5), Anniversary of the Slovak national uprising (August 29), Day of Constitution of Slovakia (September 1), Lady of Seven Sorrows (September 15), All Saints Day (November 11), Day of fight for freedom and democracy (November 17), Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing day (December 26).

When to Save

The best time to go to save money is January, right after New Year's.

When to Book

Book airfare and other services at the end of year for the upcoming year to get the best prices. For some state holidays (mentioned above) and New Year's Eve, book hotels a year in advance.
