Los Cauquenes Resort is worth the trip to the bottom of South America. Located in the world’s southernmost city of Ushuaia, at the tip of Argentina, Los Cauquenes Resort is the perfect base from which to explore Tierra del Fuego or to simply recover from your long flights.
A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, the resort mixes high-end luxury with local charm. There are exclusive experiences for guests to book, including hikes up a nearby glacier and guided tours of the nearby national park.
The Location
Los Cauquenes Resort overlooks the Beagle Channel, and has incorporated its prime location into the hotel design. The restaurant, bar, lounge, sun room, spa and most guest rooms feature panoramic glass windows that offer expansive water views.
The property is a 15-minute drive from downtown Ushuaia. The hotel runs a free shuttle throughout the day and evening.
The Rooms
The boutique hotel has 54 rooms, including suites. I stayed in a spacious premium room (pictured above). Two comfortable chairs are ideally positioned by the large window overlooking the Beagle Channel, making it the perfect spot for morning coffee. Premium-level rooms and above feature Nespresso Coffee Makers and L’Occitane toiletries.
Dining
Los Cauquenes Resort is worth booking for the (included) breakfast buffet alone. This groaning, serve-yourself spread features local delicacies such as alfajores and dulche du leche, native fruits, freshly squeezed orange juice, sparkling wine, homemade pastries, and cooked-to-order egg dishes.
The beautiful restaurant Reinamora is open throughout the day for lunch and dinner, and offers a mix of local dishes and global cuisine. (I appreciated that the menus noted which ingredients were local, so you could be sure to try something unique to the area.) There is also a bar area that serves afternoon tea and more casual fare.
The Spa
The hotel’s spa has a heated indoor/outdoor pool. Weather a bit chilly? Stay inside. Want to cool off? Swim under the glass to the outside part of the pool for some fresh air. There is also a large hot tub outside to enjoy the views from, as well as two indoor saunas.
Price and How to Book: Mid-week rates start at around $200 per night and can be booked on the Small Luxury Hotels of the World site.
