Locals tell visitors to stay clear of Limerick during the evening and late night hours. The city is often referred to as “Stab City.” The locals say Limerick becomes quite dangerous during these times. Whether or not that is true is not up for debate, but warnings should be taken seriously under any circumstance.

Stay Clear of Red Light Districts

Red lights tend to be warning signs. On the highway, they mean to stop. In districts like Perry Square, behind People’s Park, just opposite of Dock Road and the railway station, it means “danger” and to stay away. Fights that break out in this district are always near the fast food restaurants, and they usually occur every weekend.

Avoid the Traffic Hassle

Everyone is in a hurry to be some place, and safety is not at the top of the list. Be careful of the fast moving taxis. Cars tend to switch lanes very quickly, and you could easily find yourself involved in a traffic accident. If you like driving at slow or normal speeds, you will do well to stay off the grid lanes.

Avoid Nightclubs and O’Connell Street at Night

After the club closes at night, the streets become dangerous. Unless you are accompanied by a few friends during the busy times of the day or night, stay away from nightclubs. People are using hanging outside the clubs between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., drunk, and unpredictable. Avoid getting into an altercation or injured, by steering clear of any fast food stores, on O’Connell Street.

Avoid Certain Housing Estates in Limerick

Every city has certain housing areas that tend to be less desirable than others. Limerick is no different. For Limerick, the problem took root in the 70’s due to bad planning, and have been problematic since. The high crime rates are due to unemployed citizens, although, hard-working citizens also live in this vicinity as well. Avoid traveling this route by foot, dangerous things can happen.
