Product Review: Sherpani Nuage Ultra-Light Carry-On

What is it: Sherpani Nuage Carry-On

Price and Where to Buy:  $200 on Sherpani.com; $195 on Amazon

Pros: In a category flooded with “ultralight” imposters that can weigh up to eight pounds empty, the Sherpani Nuage actually delivers on its promise to be a lightweight carry-on. Weighing in at 3.9 pounds, the 22-inch carry-on doesn’t skimp on great detailing like interior mesh pockets, compression straps, and exterior pockets with lighter fabric lining (to make it easier to find things quickly). The fabric’s subtle pattern gives this bag feminine personality, and it’s got a bit of stretch so that you can fit more into the main compartment. The telescoping handle has a small cross-bar that perfectly stabilizes its companion bag, the Sherpani Soleil ($99). The Soleil is an adaptable backpack-tote-crossbody bag with travel-friendly features like exterior water bottle/umbrella pockets and a padded interior space for electronics.

Cons: This bag was intended to be a carry-on only. If you check it, you void the warranty. The tapering shape of the bag, which presumably makes it more stable (and also looks nice) means it has slightly less main pocket room along the top of the suitcase.

How it Rates:

  • Usefulness: 9/10. While it is carry-on only, which some might consider limiting, if you’re a carry-on person looking for an ultra-lightweight bag with features that improve usability without weighing it down, and appreciate feminine touches like flower-pattern-lined pockets, this is an unbeatable bag.
  • Value: 9/10. $200. This bag balances lightweight construction and thoughtful design in a way that truly sets it apart.
  • Durability: 8/10. This bag isn’t meant to be brutalized by baggage handlers, but it does seem to weather the general rigors of travel well.
  • Cool Factor: 9/10. Most “cool” suitcases feature hard sides and futuristic detailing. The Sherpani Nuage takes cool in another direction, with softer details like monochrome relief-patterned fabric and a tapering shape.

Final Verdict: The Sherpani Nuage dares to rethink what women want in a carry-on, and does a great job combining comfort, ease-of-use, and style into a truly lightweight suitcase.
