Major Storm Causes 3,500 Flight Cancellations

A major winter storm is snarling air traffic in the U.S., causing thousands of flight cancellations and long delays. According to flight-tracking website Flightstats, more than 3,500 flights have been canceled as of this morning.

The storm has brought the majority of cancellations to airports in the Midwest and Northeast. The hubs with the greatest number of cancellations include Washington Dulles, Ronald Reagan National, O’Hare, Baltimore/Washington International, LaGuardia, and Logan. Travelers should expect to see further cancellations at airports in the Northeast as the storm moves east. According to USA Today, “Cancellations also are mounting at the region’s delay-prone airports of New York JFK, New York LaGuardia, Newark Liberty and Philadelphia. Totals at those airports pale in comparison to those at their D.C. counterparts, but the four airports have more than 200 cancellations combined as of 8 a.m. ET.”

As is standard when big storms ground numerous flights, many airlines are offering change-fee waivers; this means flyers affected by the storm can adjust itineraries without penalty. Most airlines are waiving change fees for delayed and canceled flights out of select airports from March 5 through March 7. Find more information about fee waivers at the following links:
