Cute and Deadly Animals in the Air: Penguins and Spiders, Oh My!

You know it’s going to be a good flight when the pilot asks if anyone on-board is allergic to penguins. (Really, though, how would you know if you were?) Yahoo News reports that passengers aboard a Delta flight from Atlanta to New York were treated to something better than a meal cart coming down the aisle. Once the seat-belt sign was turned off (even penguins have to follow the rules) a pair of penguins waddled down the aisle, delighting passengers.

The tiny penguins, Pete and Penny, were traveling to New York to attend the premiere of the Discovery Channel’s new documentary series Frozen Planet. Luckily, the penguins were already wearing their tuxedos and could travel light, since Delta charges $25 for your first checked bag.

If you’re full of warm and fuzzy feelings from that cute story, you should probably stop reading now, as we’re about to ruin your day with a less cute, more creepy-crawly animal story out of Texas. The Daily Mail reports that 21-year old Nikki Perez was waiting at Amarillo airport, when she was bitten on the back of her neck by a Brown Recluse spider. We hope the TSA is going to start spider screening, because Perez ended up being hospitalized for five days, having part of her ear rot off, and needing a skin graft due to the bite.

Even more terrifying? Due to global warming, North America’s most deadly spider is migrating out of its  normal habitat—and possibly to where you live! We’re not sure if the spider bite or what happened to this poor Australian town is worse. Note: That’s not water in the picture.
