Underwater pumpkin carving contests? Yes, and not just one. In Guam and the Florida Keys, celebrants prefer full-body submersion over bobbing for apples. Participants in the underwater pumpkin carving contests suit up in diving gear, drag their pumpkins to a sandy underwater spot, and get carving. Prizes and festivities surround both contests.
Guam’s 15th annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest takes place on October 27 at the USO Beach in Piti. Entry for adults is $10 and participants must be certified divers. Winners receive free trips from Continental Airlines.
Key Largo’s Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest, which takes place on October 20, is hosted by Amy Slate’s Amoray Dive Resort and is open to all certified scuba divers. There’s no entry fee, but you do have to pay the regular dive-boat fee of $70 per diver.
