Ryanair to charge extra for checking in at the airport

At some point we’ll all have had enough, right? At some point we’ll collectively have our “mad as hell” moment and we just won’t take it anymore. Ladies and gentlemen, that moment—for me, at least—has arrived.

Dublin-based Ryanair, no longer simply content to charge customers extra for checking bags, eating food, calling its customer service line, or using a wheelchair, has now decided it will charge an extra £2 just for the right to actually get on the airplane.

You read that right.

Beginning September 20, Ryanair passengers will be levied up to £4 per round-trip flight to check in at the airport.

“The idea is not to make more money from this,” says a Ryanair spokesperson quoted in today’s Guardian. (Excuse me? What, that’s just a happy side effect?) “We want passengers to use our Web check-in facility in far greater numbers and check-in fewer bags,” the spokesperson continues. “The fees are entirely avoidable.”

Sure they’re avoidable, if you a) have access to the Internet while on vacation, and b) want to take some time from your trip to go online and tool around Ryanair’s website.

Personally, I’ve had enough: enough of the doublespeak, enough of the money-grubbing, enough of the nickel-and-diming—and certainly enough of airlines like Ryanair altogether.
