United wins tentative approval for new China route

Federal regulators have tentatively picked United as the winner in a hotly contested match among U.S. carriers to provide new nonstop service to China, reports The New York Times (free registration required). American, Continental, and Northwest were the also-rans in the China sweepstakes.

Pending final approval, the nonstop flights will begin March 25 and feature daily service between Washington’s Dulles airport and Beijing. Disgruntled parties have 14 days to file their objections, and the Department of Transportation will then have seven days to respond.
